Why Choose Us?

At our Certified Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Training Center, we believe Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is for EVERYONE, regardless of age, gender, athleticism, or ability. We are proud to say that we are continuing the legacy of Grandmaster Hélio Gracie, who believed jiu-jitsu should empower anyone to be able to defend themselves against a stronger opponent. This is why we offer structured martial arts curriculums for any demographic or skill level, with programs created for beginner adults, women, and children.

We take pride in creating a safe, comfortable, and welcoming learning environment for all students and family members in Richmond. We are passionate about what we do because we believe confident humans make kinder humans.

What People Are Saying

Will my child become a bully?

Through our work, we have seen that confident kids make kinder kids. We teach children how to not only stand up to bullies for themselves, but how to stand up for others. Our Rules of Engagement teach children to avoid the fight if at all possible by first using their words, and then telling an adult.

When they do need to resort to physical self-defense, we do not teach children punches or kicks in the Gracie Bullyproof program, but rather, empowered by Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, to neutralize, defend, control, and negotiate if possible.

What do I need to bring to my first kids BJJ lesson?

Upon arriving for your child's first jiu-jitsu class, we can provide a uniform, called a gi, for them to wear. We recommend showing up in comfortable undergarments or leggings, and a t-shirt or rashguard to wear under their gi or gym attire with a t-shirt.

Someone will be there to help you tie your child's belt for the first time!

My child has ADHD. Is jiu-jitsu for them?

Yes! One of the great things about martial arts classes is that it's an individual sport done in a group environment. We find all our students improve in their focus, self control, discipline and social skills. But the best part is… they don't even realize that is what our highly trained kids martial arts instructors are actually doing. They just think they are having fun!

The best way to find out for yourself is to take advantage of our limited time offer. You'll find our team so helpful and dedicated to helping your child become the best version of themselves. If you are concerned about group classes for your child, we also offer private classes until they feel ready to take on the group class setting!

Kids karate classes vs. kids BJJ classes. Which is best?

Many parents ask, what's the difference between Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Karate classes? While we believe all martial-arts have value, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has not only been proven to be the most effective martial art for a smaller person to defend themselves in a real fight for nearly a century, it also can be the most gentle.

We don't want our students turning into bullies themselves, and we also believe self-defense should be scalable, depending on the situation. Whereas kids Karate lessons or Taekwondo classes rely solely on landing punches and kicks, jiu-jitsu for kids focuses on neutralizing a threat with verbal boundaries, distance management, body control, and eventual negotiation.

We offer both programs allowing kids the opportunity be a well-rounded martial arts.

Are parents allowed to watch?

We encourage parents to watch their children in their kids martial arts lessons. We love parents getting involved! Even better… you can join in our martial arts classes for adults, and have yet another thing in common with your little one. We love seeing the bond of families who train together!

My child is not athletic. Will they feel left out?

We believe karate and jiu-jitsu are for children of all skill levels and abilities. Your child belongs here.

Through our kids martial arts classes, we have seen our students improve coordination, balance, motor skills, focus, and discipline. Plus, they make lots of great friends!

Our instructors are highly skilled in teaching martial arts to kids. It's their PASSION!

Do I need to be fit for this?

There are zero fitness requirements to be able to start our beginner Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes! One of the benefits of BJJ is that it relies on technique and timing rather than strength, speed, or athleticism.

Our students start at all different fitness levels, however, you will find that you do enhance your fitness by doing our BJJ classes at Bushin Martial Arts Jiu-Jitsu Richmond.

I have no experience, what do I do?

Just show up! Upon arriving, you may purchase a uniform (called a “gi”) from us or wear comfortable gym attire with a t-shirt and will be given a focused introductory lesson by one of our instructors before you join in the group class.

Every beginner class is taught with no previous experience necessary, so you will not feel left behind.

Our program is structured by class number, so you will always know exactly what techniques you will be learning on any given day. You can even check out the techniques of the day on GracieUniversity.com before class to get a head start!

I’m not very sporty or co-ordinated. Will that be a problem?

Not at all. In fact, many students starting in our adult martial arts classes may have described themselves like that before they started. There is absolutely no experience necessary for any of our beginner classes. You will fit right in!

Give yourself some time, and you will be astounded at what your body is capable of, and how much you can improve! Our certified martial arts instructors are trained to keep their teaching simple, effective, and beginner-focused. So even the most uncoordinated person will develop ‘ninja-like’ skills! Come see for yourself!

How do I claim your limited time offer?

We only have a certain amount of space in our martial arts training area. To take advantage of our limited time offer, the fastest way is to fill in the form at the top of this page!

Additionally, you can always give us a call. We would love to chat with you about what we do, and to help you determine if our Bushin Martial Arts Jiu-Jitsu Richmond martial arts classes would be a great fit for you and your family!

Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for women?

Absolutely! Specifically because Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) has proven reliable in defending against larger opponents for nearly a century, it is the perfect martial art for women.

Many women train in our Women Empowered® program and then transfer into our co-ed Gracie Combatives classes. However, both programs are suitable for female beginners.

We love seeing the physical confidence develop in our female students as they gain self-defense skills on the mat!

What do I need to bring to my first martial arts lesson?

Upon arriving for your karate or first jiu-jitsu class, you wear available for purchase or you may wear comfortable gym attire with a t-shirt during the free class trial period. We recommend showing up in comfortable undergarments or leggings, and a t-shirt or rashguard that you can wear under your gi. We will also have training attire available for purchase after your class.

I hate doing gym workouts, I find them boring. Will this be similar?

Definitely not! Our students are often so into the class and learning the techniques, that it’s only after the class that they realize they worked up a sweat!

The variety, challenge, and the feeling of accomplishment when you master a self-defense skill or technique is why students love our Jiu-Jitsu classes at Bushin Martial Arts Jiu-Jitsu Richmond.

But we find it’s the friendships and fun that keep students coming back. It’s like their second family. Why not find out for yourself? Book an intro class today!

I have a jiu-jitsu or karate uniform, can I wear it?

We welcome uniform from other school during your trial period or visiting.  However, only white gi are permitted with a rashguard undergarment is required.

Do you offer open mat or no-gi only training?

Open mat & no-gi training are available at Bushin Martial Arts Jiu-Jitsu RVA.

Is sparring allowed for white belts?

For the safety of our students and their training partners, sparring is not the primary focus at the beginning of training. Positional sparring is introduced once a student is mentally ready, has met the minimum class attendance, and can demonstrate safe and ego-free training practices.
